Before starting the porting process, it’s important to determine which category your phone number falls under. In Australia, porting requests are classified as either CAT A or CAT C, depending on the type of service attached to this number.

  • CAT A (Simple Port): This is the most common type of porting request. It applies to single-line numbers that are not linked to any complex service features. Toll-Free and Shared Cost numbers typically fall under this category. CAT A ports are generally straightforward and quicker to process.
  • CAT C (Complex Port): This category is used when the number is part of a more complex service arrangement (e.g, ISDN services, Line Hunt, Fax Services, Number Blocks, or ADSL services). These requests involve additional steps and typically require a longer processing time.

Porting requirements

Before starting the porting process, it’s important to understand that in Germany, phone numbers are often grouped into ranges or “blocks.” These blocks can contain as few as 10 numbers or more than 100. If the number you wish to port is part of a block, all numbers within that block must be ported together. It is not possible to port only one number from the range. We strongly recommend checking with your current carrier to confirm whether your number belongs to a block before submitting your porting request. This step helps ensure Aircall can process your request correctly the first time.

Digital extensions

If you have any digital extensions (shorter or longer numbers based on the main number/s), please make sure to include them in the request, along with a clear note indicating that they are extensions.
 

In addition, some German carriers require that your current contract have an end date before numbers can be ported out. This will initiate the termination of your contract (including internet, if applicable) with the current provider. To prevent delays or rejections, we strongly recommend contacting your carrier in advance to inform them of your intention to port your numbers.

  • Single-Line Port: A port order for an individual number or group of numbers that are not associated with a number range. Single-line numbers are able to be ported freely and individually as single numbers.
  • Multi-Line Port: A port order used when porting a large batch or range of numbers. On occasion, numbers can be grouped together in ranges varying in size from 10 to 100+. If the numbers you are looking to port are part of a larger range or have associated numbers, all numbers will need to be ported together.
