To maintain the quality of our service and prevent misuse, certain volume restrictions on SMS messaging exist. This article details the limits and helpful information so that you can get the most out of business messaging with Aircall.
Why Do These Limits Exist?
The limits are in place for the following reasons:
- Industry Standards & Compliance: We adhere to telecommunications industry standards and regulations to ensure responsible messaging practices.
- Spam & Fraud Prevention: These limits help to reduce spam, fraud, and other misuse of the SMS platform.
- Provider Requirements: We must comply with certain restrictions set by different providers and carriers to maintain our service.
- Service Quality: Managing message volume helps ensure stable and reliable SMS delivery for all our customers.
Understanding SMS Segments
- An SMS segment is a unit of 160 characters (using only a specific range of characters known as GSM-7 encoding).
- Messages longer than 160 characters are split into multiple segments. Recipients see these as a single message (up to 1600 characters).

The limits below are subject to change:
Per User Limit
Outbound SMS: 13,000 segments per user, per month
- Messages sent via HubSpot Workflow count toward the user limit based on the “Sender User” in the workflow configuration
Per Number Limits
SMS sent via Aircall App
- 20,000 outbound SMS segments per month

- 100 outbound segments per hour
- 1,000 outbound segments per day

- 500 outbound segments per hour
- 2,000 outbound segments per day

Note: Volume from the API is restricted to 60 requests per minute, per company for all API usage. Advanced Messaging companies have 120 requests per minute, per company for API usage.

SMS via HubSpot Workflows
- This feature is intended for workflow automation, not bulk marketing
- 200 messages per minute
- 1,000 messages per hour
- 5,000 messages per day
- 10,000 messages per month
- Messages sent via this method count toward the number limit based on the number in the workflow configuration

What Happens When Limits Are Reached?
When a limit is reached, the Aircall app or API will block additional text messages from being sent until the time period (Hour, Day, Month) for the limit has passed. Once the time period of the limit reach has passed, outbound messaging resumes for the user or number which hit the limit. If a message fails to be sent due to the limit, the system will not attempt to send the message again.
What Limits Exist When Using the API and Aircall App for Messaging?
If you send outbound messages via both the API and the Aircall app, the limits for each source are tallied independently.
