Starting October 1, 2026, Meta (owner of WhatsApp) is introducing new charges for two types of outbound messages that have been free until now. This is a change Meta is making platform-wide, not a price increase from Aircall, we pass these charges through to your invoice based on your usage, with no markup added.
What's changing
| Message type | What it is | Before Oct 1, 2026 | From Oct 1, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service messages | Free-form replies you (or your AI agent) send within an open 24-hour conversation window | Free | Billed, starting at the 1,001st message sent per line per month |
| Utility messages | Automated updates (like order confirmations) sent within that same 24-hour window | Free | Billed |
Note: Every WhatsApp number gets 1,000 free Service messages a month before these charges apply. The free allocation doesn't roll over to the next month.
Meta is also adjusting its per-template rates for some countries, independent of the two changes above. See our WhatsApp usage rates article for your country's current pricing.
What stays the same
| Message type | What it is | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Inbound messages | Messages your customers send to you | Free |
| Marketing & Authentication messages | Templates you send to start a conversation, or to verify a customer's identity | Billed, no change to how these are charged |
For a full list of current rates by country, see WhatsApp in Aircall: usage rates.
FAQs
Why is this happening?
Meta is changing how it charges for WhatsApp messaging, platform-wide. It isn't specific to Aircall. See Meta's pricing documentation for the full policy.
When does it start?
October 1, 2026, on Meta's side.
How does the 1,000 free Service messages a month work?
The first 1,000 Service messages sent per line, per month, aren't charged. Charging starts at the 1,001st message. Unused volume doesn't roll over to the next month.
Will Aircall charge more than Meta does?
No. We pass the fee through at cost, with no markup added.
How much will this cost me?
See our WhatsApp usage rates article for exact numbers by country and currency.
Does this affect messages my customers send me?
No. Inbound messages stay free.
What about my Marketing and Authentication messages?
These aren't part of this specific change, but note that Meta may adjust template rates independently, see the rates article for current pricing.
What's a "Service" message?
Any free-form reply you or your AI agent sends within an open 24-hour conversation window, instead of a pre-approved template.
