Some UK mobile number ranges cannot receive SMS messages sent from Aircall. This article explains why these SMS messages fail and how you can still contact these numbers using other channels.

Affected number ranges

Aircall SMS cannot be delivered to the following number ranges:

  • Isle of Man (+44 1624 / 01624)
  • Guernsey (+44 1481 / 01481)
  • Jersey (+44 1534 / 01534)
  • Gibraltar (+350)
  • Other Crown Dependencies and overseas territories (for example, Alderney, Sark, Herm)

Why SMS does not work

Aircall SMS is a domestic only service. This means the sender and recipient must both be located in the same country for the message to be successfully delivered.

The numbers listed above are not considered UK numbers from a carrier perspective. Although they may appear similar to UK mobile numbers, they belong to Crown Dependencies, which operate independently from the United Kingdom.

Key points to understand:

  • Each Crown Dependency has its own country code and numbering plan.
  • Some of these regions use the +44 prefix for convenience, but telecom carriers still classify them as international destinations.
  • When routing SMS, carriers treat these numbers as international traffic.
  • Aircall SMS is designed to work only within the domestic region of your Aircall number and therefore cannot deliver SMS to these destinations.

Workaround: use WhatsApp in Aircall

Although SMS delivery is not supported for these numbers, you can still reach them using WhatsApp through Aircall.

Steps:

  1. Open your Aircall Dashboard > Numbers
  2. Chosen number > Integration > Activate your number for WhatsApp
  3. Follow the setup instructions in the guide below.
