Most of the time, the best media server is automatically chosen for a particular user. But sometimes the selection is not optimal, specially for users located far from the media servers or using numbers far away from their actual location.
In those cases it is best to choose the server manually. Apply the following easy procedure to select the best media server for you:
- Select a media server that is near to you and run the Network Diagnostics. Write down the values for packet loss (it should be zero!) jitter and roundtrip time.
- Select another media server near to you or near to the numbers you call and run the Network Diagnostics again and jot down the packet loss, jitter and roundtrip time.
- Repeat the process with other media servers till you have checked all the nearest media servers and the ones closest to the numbers you call too.
- Then compare the values of jitter, roundtrip time and packet loss (this one should be zero) and keep the server which showed the lowest values. That should be the media server giving you the best call quality.
Bear in mind that different calls may have different best servers depending on which number you are calling. Typically servers close to you or to the other people in the call will provide better quality than servers placed far away from the people involved in the call.
