Call spoofing occurs when a caller intentionally falsifies the information transmitted to your Caller ID to make it appear as though the call is coming from a different number. Scammers often use familiar or legitimate-looking numbers to trick recipients into answering and sharing sensitive information.

This issue is widespread across the telecommunications industry and affects landline, wireless, and IP-based services. It is not specific to Aircall.

How to recognize call spoofing

Call spoofing can be difficult to detect because the displayed number may appear to come from:

  • A government agency
  • A trusted business
  • Someone in your contacts list

You might also encounter these situations:

  • Customers report receiving calls from your number, even though you did not call them.
  • You receive calls from strangers returning a call you never made.

In both cases, the real caller has made it appear as though the call came from your number.

Why spoofing happens

Call spoofing can occur for two main reasons:

  • Intentional spoofing: This is the most common type and is used by scammers who disguise their identity to trick recipients into answering calls or sharing personal information.

  • Unintentional spoofing: In some rare cases, carriers may continue using a number that has already been ported out to another provider, which can cause calls to appear as though they are coming from the wrong number

What to do if you experience call spoofing

Unfortunately, there is little we can do to assist with call spoofing on Aircall’s side apart from advising anyone receiving spoofed calls to submit a report to their local agency and encouraging customers to protect themselves by verifying that they are speaking with a legitimate representative of your business and not a scammer.

Please be sure to not provide any personal information. Identity thieves often pose as representatives of banks, credit card companies, creditors, or government agencies to get account numbers, social security numbers, mother's maiden names, passwords, and any other identifying personal information to use.
